The RV5/50 is a varistor surge suppressor designed to reduce maximum overvoltage peaks and to limit—or even eliminate—high pre-damping voltage frequencies. It is intended for use with:

• AC-operated conventional contactors for rated control circuit voltages between 24 … 50 V AC, 50/60 Hz

• DC-operated conventional contactors for rated control circuit voltages between 24 … 50 V DC

Inductive circuit operation generates overvoltages, especially when the contactor coil opens. The electromagnetic energy stored during coil energization is released on opening as high-amplitude surges, which can reach several kilovolts. These surges may cause issues such as interference with electronic devices, insulation breakdown, or even damage to sensitive components.

Note:
A varistor is a resistor whose resistance drops significantly when a specific voltage threshold is exceeded.
